Tips About Knits

authoradmin | June 26, 2009

The world of knits is a large and varied one. There are so many different kinds of knitted fabrics from which to choose. Knit fabrics are used to make a huge variety of clothing and retail items. You might be surprised by the many types of knit styles that there are and by the many items that utilize knit fabrics. While knitting, knit size is controlled by the size of the knitting needles and the yarn weight.

There are many different ways to achieve a knit fabric, and an experienced knitter will know how to make many different knit styles with her or his knitting needles. Some common knits are: the double knit, the sweatshirt knit, the jersey knit, ribbing, the spandex knit, the sweater knit, the interlock knit, the velour and velvet knit, and the fleece knit. The double knit fabric is a heavy to medium weight, and is generally used for designs such as pants and dresses. The sweatshirt knit is generally used for clothing styles that have a sporty design.

The jersey knit is a light to medium weight fabric and has ribs on one side, and horizontal lines on the other. Jersey knit fabrics are used for many different styles, such as dresses, skirts, sheets and more. Ribbing is a tough fabric that is generally only used for cuffs and collars. A spandex knit is a very small knit, and is used when a lot of stretch is needed, such as in bathing suits. A sweater knit can vary from being the heaviest weight, to one of the lightest, depending on the yarn used.

An interlock knit is a light to medium weight, and has a light ribbing on both sides. This knit is used for anything from dresses to sleepwear. The velour knit is a shiny, stretchy fabric that can be used for anything from sweatpants to dress tops. A fleece knit is a bulky, soft fabric, usually used for outdoor garments or blankets.

Most of these knits can be made through knitting. Some of the more intricate patterns may require the use of a knitting machine; however, you might be surprised at what you can do with just a pair of knitting needles. There is a pretty easy formula to follow when creating a knit. The bigger the knitting needles, the bigger the holes will be, and the bulkier the yarn, the bigger the pattern. So for a small, lightweight fabric, a knitter would use lightweight, thin yarn and small needles. There are many different knitting books that outline the procedures for creating the different knit styles. There are also books that cover the same topics for crocheting, if someone prefers that method of knitting. Of course, a hand knit fabric is never going to look the same as a machine knitted one; however, many people appreciate the time and thoughtfulness it takes for someone to create something by hand for them. It is not necessary to create garments that look store-bought.

So that is a little information about knits. There are a lot of fabrics which are knitted and you may not have known about them before. If you want to learn how to knit, then you should consider joining a knitting club in your area, or try a knitting blog. A club is a great place to learn more about the intricacies of knitting, but studying knitting books will work almost as well, if there is no club in your community.

How To Use A Knitting Machine

There are different categories of knitting machine models and most of them are classified according to domestic and industrial usage. The knitting purpose consists in the making of large amounts of cloth or linen at a very rapid pace. Other terms to refer to a knitting machine are knitting frame or knitting loom, though the latter evokes a device different in terms of structure. Modern technologies make intricate applications possible particularly when the knitting machine is engine-assisted. Thus, the creative process has developed to such an extent that computer programs are now able to read the knitting patterns.

The variety in the structure of a modern knitting machine doesn’t stop here, differences are noticeable in the design of the beds that can be flat and rectangular with the form of the fabrics influenced by such shapes. Even needles operation in the knitting machine is more versatile: depending on the size of the device, the number of hooks varies from 200 above. Sometimes the needles can be automatically programed to run on different paths and to knit two colors. This multicolor feature remains an advantage of most modern knitting machine models.

The fabric created by a home knitting machine resembles hand knitting closely, however, it is beyond any doubt that the processing speed is superior to the hand method. Another benefit is the evenness of the fabric that is achieved with the possibility to save tons of time. Nevertheless, a knitting machine will not bring the same satisfaction as hand knitting. A distinct category in the knitting machine family is that of models produced for home use; they are less evolved from the technological point of view and have limitations in terms of knitting capacity.

A very common confusion is made between the knitting machine and the sewing machine; well, they are both used for clothes or apparel items making, but they operate on different principles and with distinct materials. As for complexity, the knitting machine definitely has the leading place; it is enough to see the number of buttons, wires, hooks and springs to feel powerless and incapable to operate it. However, when you get the trick and start knitting on it, you’ll see how great if feels to knit all sorts of fine models that seemed out of reach before. With a knitting machine you’ll surely get better garments!

Spool Knitting Is It As Hard As They Say?

authoradmin | February 1, 2009

Although sharing the same old category of knitting devices, spool knitting uses a spool with four nails in it for the design of the fabric instead of the traditional needles. Owing to the very basic structure of the items it requires, spool knitting has long been part of educational practices in crafts classes. Thus, this way of getting children to learn knitting is both instructive and fun. The items necessary for spool knitting include the spool, whether ready-made or improvised, some brads, a hammer, a drill and yarn.

If you try to make the spool yourself, the process could get too complex and time consuming. The first step to begin with is to pass the yarn through the spool, from top to bottom, but make sure to leave a few inches of yarn hang out from the bottom. It is advisable that for this first stage of spool knitting you follow pictures or close face to face instructions so that you may begin in the right way. Then, it is time to use the crochet hook to make loops and pass them over the brads so as to create the cast on.

Depending on what you want to knit, you can use a more or less large number of brads; so far, spool knitting has the widest applications for cord making, which is suitable for four or six brads according to the size you aim to achieve. Yet, it is known that odd numbers are easier to work with in casting on, therefore, stick to the four or six variants particularly if you are a beginner. When knitting, pass the yarn around every brad and the passage to the next knitted line requires that you pull the previous loop out, up and over each and every brad.

Spool knitting allows for various color alternation particularly since the changes are almost basic. Simply cut one yarn type and tie in a different one so that you may be able to continue the knitting process but with a different color. Closely follow the pictures in books or on web sites if you are just discovering the secrets of spool knitting. Before completing work, remember to tie off the ends so that you don’t spoil the knit. If you need professional spool knitting, it is preferable to buy a spool knitting machine that works a lot faster and with superior results.
