Your wax mix will be oil based, so your fragrance should also be oil based. Why? Oil and water do not mix so a water based perfume will not mix properly with the oil based wax.

2. Select Your Wax

The basics of {making a scented candle} are more or less the same as for ordinary wax candles. Begin by choosing your wax type. Available in the market is a versatile range of wax starting with the naturals, beeswax, palm & soy, and progressing to paraffin or gel wax. You should decide on the fragrance intensity of your candles before selecting your wax. For instance, in case of gel candles, gel wax with less density holds less fragrance compared to gel wax with higher density.

3. The Art of Making Aromatic Candles

Now we’ll go through the process of creating aromatic candles.

The first job is to melt the wax. For this purpose, a double boiler can be used. That means place the wax in a small pot and, in turn, put that container into a slightly larger pot containing water. Now heat the H2O. Use a thermometer to ensure the wax is not burnt. Maintain the temperature at a constant 170-180 degrees F.

Once your wax has melted, insert a wick in the mold & take the wax away from the heat source. Next add the fragrance oil that you’ve selected. One ounce fragrance oil to 1 pound wax will create a 6% fragrance. Greater amounts of fragrance oil will cause the candle to burn out quicker.

Want to learn how to make scented candles?  Scented candles add a certain amount of elegance to a room.  The light from any candle gives its surroundings a romantic feel.  However, when fragrance is added to the room through a scented candle, the elegance of the room grows.

A tip on how to make scented candles is that you can purchase fragrance oil, which is available both in craft stores and on the internet.  Considering the fact that oil is close to wax in terms of their chemical composition, oil is preferred over water or alcohol-based perfumes.  Oil doesn’t dissolve in or mix with water.  So, by using water-based perfumes, the liquid will simply float to the bottom of your melted wax.

The wonderful thing about scented candles is that the fragrance is noticed even when the candle is not lit.  Scented candles make great gifts, and are even more appreciated when it is made by hand.  The process of how to make scented candles is the same as making regular candles.  You will need to consider which kind of wax you are going to use.

There are several kinds of wax that are available today.  Soy, palm and beeswax are some natural waxes.  There is also paraffin wax which is your basic wax that most candles are made of and there are also gel candles.  Both of these types of wax can be used to make scented candles also.  Although, with gel candles, the amount of fragrance to be used should also be taken into consideration when choosing the type of wax.  High density gel wax holds more fragrance compared to low density gel wax.

When making any type of candle, the wax should first be melted, before pouring it into the candle mold.  A double boiler should be used to melt the wax.  Place a smaller pot that has the wax in it into a larger pot that is filled with water.  Be careful not to put the temperature of the stove top too high because wax can burn.  You can use a thermometer and heat the wax to be around 170-180 degrees.  The wick should be added to the mold.  The wax can be removed from the heat source when it has completely melted.

It is now time to add the fragrance oil.  You can add one ounce of fragrance oil to one pound of wax.  This will give you a 6% fragrance concentration.  One thing to remember when learning how to make scented candles is to make sure that you do not add too much fragrance.  It may seem that the addition of more fragrance will yield a better result but doing so can actually cause problems.

One thing that could happen is that the candle will not burn properly because of the higher concentration of liquid.  It will result in pools of liquid in the candle.  You can always experiment with your candle making in order to gain more knowledge about how to make scented candles.  You can keep records of how much fragrance you use to how much wax and find your own scented candle recipe.

The inclusion of scents and colors in candle making yields more variety.  Won’t it feel great to present your loved one with a candle with a soothing essence and a relaxing scent?  Since you now have the necessary knowledge on how to make scented candles, you can make some on your own.
