Guitars Are Just Plain Beautiful

authoradmin | March 24, 2010

Most any person who really loves certain styles of music such as rock, jazz or blues thinks that guitars are just plain beautiful. They may not even know how to play the instrument, but they do know the truth of the place of the guitar in many kinds of popular music today, including rock ‘n roll, which it’s dominated since the rise of that form of music. In fact, many famous guitarists are completely associated with certain kinds of guitars.

For example, think about a number of the most famous folk musicians and the guitars they’re associated with. Chances are, most of them are acoustic, such as a really nice dreadnought acoustic guitar that might have cost thousands of dollars but also might have come from a secondhand store or as a hand-me-down. The point is, many guitars become attached to the players that own them and vice versa.

Besides, the sheer beauty of a guitar because of its shape and the way it’s handled helps it stand out from many other instruments. They are also attractive because they can be relatively easy to learn, at least on a basic level. And acoustic guitars are doubly attractive to people because they don’t require the use of amplification and can be slung over a back and taken anywhere.

Before rushing out to buy an expensive Alvarez acoustic guitar, for example, decide what form and style of music is most attractive. Many of the most famous rock guitarists have never touched an acoustic guitar in their lives and a great many acoustic guitarists of some note report never having touched an electric guitar. It probably is more a matter of preference, though.

Usually, it’s a given that there are certain styles of music that are more appropriate for certain types of guitars. Rock, blues and jazz seem to be more associated with electric guitars than acoustic guitars, though both guitars are seen in almost every kind of music. What’s really certain, though, is that a musical piece — no matter its style — is improved by the addition of a guitar.

For those considering picking up the guitar, appreciating the beauty of it is a prerequisite but also understanding that one doesn’t have to spend an arm and a leg to find a guitar is also important. For a fact, one should also understand that buying a cheap instrument can help to make the learning experience difficult because the guitar will not be very playable. That’s why it might be a good idea to spend a little bit on a guitar — such as a Takamine acoustic guitar, for example — right out of the gate.

Guitars of all types and kinds have attracted people to them for the last hundred years or so. Ever since the rise of rock ‘n roll, electric guitars have most certainly come to the fore, though acoustic guitars are more than holding their own when it comes to playing music. They require no amplification and they’re very portable. Given all that, understanding and appreciating the sublime beauty of a guitar is quite easy.

The Attraction of Guitars

My Resophonic Guitar Collection

The guitar is about the most well known musical instrument in the world. Or maybe the simple drum is really the most well known musical instrument. There can’t be many people who have never seen a guitar and don’t know what a guitar is.

One thing that makes guitars so appealing is their accessibility. Unlike a Piano, or a drum kit, a guitar is portable and almost anyone can pick one up. But creating a tune on a guitar can be a struggle.

I’ve met talented people who have taken no time at all to master the guitar to a level good enough to start a band. Then there are other people, myself included, who have been playing for many years and still learning.

But these are the reasons why people get so enthusiastic about guitars. There is always a new tune to learn, a new guitar to buy or a new guitar gizmo to try out. Learning to play the guitar is a massively rewarding hobby but be warned, it can take over your life.

In recent years I’ve become something of a guitar collector. I am particularly keen on resonator guitars. These are a form of acoustic guitar that uses a resonator cone made of spun allumnium to give the guitar extra volume. The resonator mechanical amplifier comes from the early 20th century, before electronic amplifiers were in common use. The resonator guitar sound is synonymous with the blues and this is the style of music that I love.

If you’re already a guitarist or if you know any guitarists you will understand how obsessive they can be. Guitar enthusiasts will often find that playing guitar, collecting guitars, reading guitar magazines and going to guitarist gigs can take over their lives. And if you have a guitar playing husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend you will probably find yourself feeling less important than their obsessiion with guitars.
