Bachmann Digital Controller

authoradmin | March 29, 2010

So you want to run more than one locomotive on your tracks?  No problem, as long as you have a digital controller.  The Bachmann Digital Controller will do the job!  You haven’t heard of Bachmann Digital Controllers?  Oh, yeah, I forgot how old school you are.  Well let me see if I can give you the low down buddy. Fire away!

What is a Bachmann Digital Controller?

The Bachmann Digital Controller is a gizmo that lets you to control up to 10 different locomotives on the same track at the touch of a button.  It’s a little bigger than your average TV remote control.

How can you find a Bachmann Digital Controller?

Well if you know anything about Bachmann, you know that they have wonderful starter kits.  Anyway, these kits always come with a Bachmann Digital Controller.  It’s just one of the wonderful goodies they include along with their trains.  And enough track to create a little loop as well.  There’s a reason why Bachmann has made a name for itself with these beginner kits.  Bachmann is always fairly priced.  If you’re just getting started and are into HO size you can’t miss with a Bachmann beginner kit.

Are Bachmann trains good?

Bachmann model trains are perhaps the most popular trains these days for hobbyists who are just beginning. Nobody puts together a better straight from the box, ready on the first day, beginner kit than Bachmann.  Bachmann always has an ear to ground looking for up coming trends and fads, so you are likely to locate what want with Bachmann.  Bachmann’s just a really great deal if you’re just starting to indulge your model train desires!

Is Bachmann a well known company?

The Bachmann company has been in existence since the 1830’s and the original 19th century families that started Bachmann, the Carlisle’s and the Bachmann’s still have ancestors on the company’s board.  Bachmann’s an American company, founded in Philadelphia, though it has since relocated its operations to Beijing around the turn of the millennium.  Although they were in existence long before relative new comers like Lionel and American Flyer, Bachmann didn’t get into the model train designing business until after these other 20th century companies were the well established industry leaders.  Bachmann’s strategy has largely been shaped by its attempt to find a niche outside of the sphere of influence of what was then the main player in model locomotives, Lionel locomotive (now Lionel LLC).  Just as people were looking for a simpler, less space consuming and less expensive alternative to Lionel’s O gauge locomotives, there was Bachmann with its easy to set up starter Kits.  These were a giant success and Bachmann’s HO size trains have been the industry leaders ever since.  The Bachmann Digital Controller is just the one of the many innovations that Bachmann has chosen in order to remain the most popular beginners model trainer makers around.

Can you give me a technical explanation of how the controller functions?

Well to comprehend it you first have to get the problem that it solved.  Back in the day before controllers, it used to be that locomotives moved because the track was electrified.  So if the locomotive was on the track it took off when you ran electricity through it.  To create a layout with more than one train you needed separate circuits and power sources or else both the locomotives would only move at the same time.  This was okay if you were only going to operate say two locomotives, but if you added more trains than this, all the separate wiring and devices started to really make a mess.  What the Bachmann digital controller and other similar technologies did was place tiny processors into individual trains By placing a microchip in each individual train, the locomotive can now differentiate between commands sent to its tiny processor versus those sent to the other trains.  This makes it so that the track is no longer in command.  The controller tells the tiny processor when to go and the train follows its command.  And you thought computers could never do anything helpful.  That clear things up?

If I collect classic locomotives am I just out of luck?  Do you just have to stick to the old fashioned way?

No. Actually you can install the chip into the locomotives wiring yourself.  I’ve never done it myself, but I’m informed by more experienced hobbyists that it’s not as difficult as it sounds.  I personally avoid anything involving soldering, but as you know I’m all thumbs.  I’ve heard that even I can perform this procedure and as you know I don’t couldn’t even explain the difference between a Phillips screw driver and a flathead.

Anyway, that’s what I know about the Bachmann Digital Controller.  Now, which one of these is a Phillips? Now, the one with the straight head or the one with the x head?

American Model Trains

authoradmin | March 12, 2010

Pop quiz:  what are the three most widely recognized American toy trains manufacturers? I bet you’ll remember them when I remind you.  Here they are: “Lionel, American Flyer and Bachmann Trains”.  You probably didn’t known that Bachmann was American, but it is. And American Flyer was a maker not just a line of trains.  Here’s the skinny:

Lionel Trains:

Lionel was perhaps the gold standard of model train makers back in the day.  Thanks to perfect marketing Lionel out maneuvered its enemies.  One tactic it used was to embed model trains to Christmas traditions, making the circular train tracks around the Christmas tree a staple of the Christmas iconography.  Their O gauge trains which were one 48th the size of real world trains ruled the roast up until the 1950’s when HO scale trains started to take over the market.  Lionel began to have problems in the 1960’s and went through several rebirths before coming back in it current incarnation.  Now Lionel is making a comeback, again offering its O scale and some G scale models to a new audience of model train hobbyists. Their great trains are well loved by all.

American Flyer:

We mostly recognize American Flyer trains as a line of trains now, but they were their own manufacturer until 1966 when they were bought out by Lionel. American Flyer had its humble beginning in turn of the century Chicago.  They were bought out by A C Gilbert who also popularized the famous “erector sets” of the early 20thcentury. American Flyer was the most robust national competitor to Lionel and its trains are perhaps the most popular collectible trains to this day. After World War II the company slowly failed as its trains switched to S scale.  When Lionel bought American Flyer in 1966, they kept and refurbished much of the equipment.  In the last ten years Lionel has started reproducing the most famous and popular of the American Flyer trains using the original manufacturing devices but updating the trains with new sound systems and 21st century quality controls.

Bachmann Industries:

Although this was the tardiest of the three toy train makers to enter the model train market, it is the the oldest of the three–having been founded way back in 1833. Despite its move from Philidelphia to Beijing, the Carlisle’s and Bachmann’s ancestors still hold positions on the company’s board.  Bachmann had its rise after World War II when it created less expensive starter kits in HO scale meant to appeal to a larger audience than the Lionel and American Flyer brands.  Their success continues to this day and they remain one the leading HO producers in the world.

We have never had more choices in model training. The Internet has created whole new choices for model train hobbyists.  You can choose from almost any gauge and from any era of train at just the touch of button. The three American classics I have been discussing are really American treasures.
