“Make homemade soap. No special tools needed. Just get your ingredients from us and use our recipes. Its easy.” The sales person called enthusiastically. While her statements might be true for some people it would not be true for a great many others. The cook would have to have up to date gadgets in the kitchen. There are two tools which are essential to consistently making good soap: a thermometer and scales that are accurate to the gram or to 0.05 of an ounce.

The thermometer is needed because the temperatures are important to make homemade soap successfully. If the temperatures are too low then your mixture can come to a false trace where it looks as though it is ready to pour into the mould but it is only the solid fats and oils setting again. Other problems when stirring with too high or too low temperatures is that your soap can go grainy. Lye or oils that are at too high a temperature sometimes cause the mix to develop chunks that can’t be stirred out. Successful soapmakers suggest this cannot be fixed and the mixture must be thrown out. So it is important you get a cooking thermometer that measures in the 60 to 140 degree Fahrenheit (100 – 200 degree Celcius) range. This is lower than most meat thermometers so make sure you can get the lower ranges as well as the higher ones.

The second very important tool needed is an accurate set of scales that measure to very close tolerances. If you make homemade soap in small quantities (anything under 3 poiunds or 1.5 kg of oil) you need to have scales that will measure accurately to the gram or to 0.05 of the ounce as the lye quantity is very important. If your scales are not accurate enough you can end up with too much lye and it will leave you with little stings and a slimy bar if you persist in using the soap. If you have proportionately too much fat compared to lye you have a different problem. Under some conditions this soap can develop a bad smell or grow some mold on it. So do make sure you have the right tools so you can get the proportions right when you make homemade soap.

If you’re looking for a fun new hobby, but don’t have a lot of space in your home, why not consider N gauge trains? These small model trains are 1:148 or 1:160 smaller than the real thing, have tracks a mere 9mm between the rails, and have just as much detail as the real thing - while being easier to store and more affordable to own than the real thing! First of all, a little bit of history on these great model trains, and then we will talk about what you need to begin with n gauge trains.

While model trains have been around in one form or another since the late 1920s, the N gauge trains didn’t really take off as a hobby until 1963, when Germany began commercially producing them. Powered by DC motors with a maximum of 12 V DC, the use of N gauge tracks allows hobbyists with limited space to continue enjoying their hobby. There’s no doubt, using n gauge tracks and trains gives more serious model train hobbyists to build larger layouts, as N gauge is smaller, and therefor allows more room for additional track and other details.

To get started with N gauge trains, it’s a great idea to get a book or e-book about these unique model trains. While they normally aren’t recommended for people starting out, with some research and a guide to assist you, it should not be a problem begining with N gauge, even if you have never worked with them before. Of course, if you aren’t sure about n gauge, at least for now, you can also start with HO, which is the larger, more standard size. No matter what gauge you go with, you’ll want to do some research on manufacturers to decide which one you want to buy your starter kit or individual tracks and trains from.

N gauge trains are an enjoyable way to spend your free time, while at the same time meeting new people who share your interests. Correct, you heard that right. There are many model railroad groups and clubs out there, devoted to bringing people who love model trains together to share information, tips, layouts and advice on all things about model train.

One of the best ways to combine the joys of running model trains and collecting them is with trains O scale. These little machines are built on a very tiny scale, and though they are designed to look realistic and detailed, the main point of them is to be able to run them. Collecting them is a good choice of a hobby because they are not fragile artifacts that can break with the slightest touch. The reason for this is that they were made to be affordable and durable because children loved to play with them.

The focus on function over tiny details is quit evident with the track as well. Those that designed these miniature trains were much more concerned with having them be easily operated rather than compromising it for the sake of being accurate. This is evident because many model railroaders built their own track in the past, whether it was narrow or wide gauge. There are regional differences as well, as UK O scale running stock is 1:43.5, while the US uses 1:48 scale. As for types of power, the trains can go on a more realistic looking two rail track with a direct current voltage source, or they instead use a third rail, which isn’t realistic looking but allows for movement.

For people who want to pursue o scale model trains as a hobby seriously, the gauge that’s used in the United States uses is a wise choice beause it’s the same one that most dollhouses use. To put it another way, if you have any thought of changing the appearance of the town that your model train travels through, you’ll have a lot of choices wit the 1:48 scale using items such as people. buildings and accessories.

So for those that are looking for an interesting, hands on hobby with a lot of different areas to explore, you should consider collecting and model trains O scale. You will like the enjoyment of seeking out different makes and models, and if you enjoy construction then you won’t have a problem designing your own track layouts. Of course, if you have any children that might want to play with your creation, that won’t be the worst thing considering how sturdily these units are designed.
